Awards were presented at the annual Mount Ayr Community high school fine arts banquet Saturday night and Kelsey ALLEN was
awarded two of the top honors. ALLEN was presented the Fine Arts Achievement award for the senior who has shown talent,
dedication and great achievement in all the fine arts. ALLEN was also presented the ACDA award as the top senior vocal
music student.
Students at the Mount Ayr Community elementary school were taught about safety on the farm when Mount Ayr Community FFA
chapter members brought examples of farm equipment to the elementary school Friday. Students learned about safety on a
combine, the dangers of power takeoffs, four-wheeler safety and tractor and grain safety as part of the event. Members
also shared Food for America information earlier in the week.
The daughter of a Delphos resident has passed the national competency examination for the practice of opticianry (contact
lens). Tammy L. FLUGGE of Marshalltown is the daughter of Ruth SAVILLE of Delphos and the late Robert SAVILLE. FLUGGE
now earns the right to display her credentials after her signature.
A Mount Ayr Community high school student has been named one of 17 Herbert Hoover Uncommon Students for 2002. Lyndon
HAWKINS, a Mount Ayr Community junior, has been selected to the program of the Hoover Presidential Library Association
in West Branch. Juniors submit a project proposal and two letters of recommendation to be chosen. HAWKINS' project was
entitled "Tire Retaining Wall."
Melanie JACKSON of Grand River, a senior at Mount Ayr Community school district, has been awarded the Academic and
Community Enrichment scholarship in the amount of $11,000 from Cornell College.
Among seniors receiving plaques for four years of participation in the Mount Ayr Communityhigh school band were Kyle FORD,
Holly MEESTER, Landi McFARLAND, Joey RUSK, Mark HYMBAUGH, Jacob PENICK, Nick WILKEY, Kelsey ALLEN and Courtney CANNON.
A Mount Ayr Community high school athlete has signed a letter of intent to play golf with a division I university. T. J.
REDDING has signed to play with the Iowa State University golf squad and attend the university in Ames next year. REDDING
is the first Mount Ayr Community high school athlete to receive a scholarship to a division I school in many years.
There were some 27 youngsters who braved blustery weather Sundayat Fife's Grove park for the annual Sons of the American
Legion kids fishing day. Jake GLENDENNING caught the first fish within one minute of the opening gunshot. Shelton TRIGGS
caught the biggest fish and Cody DOMAN had the most fish. Colton BOLLES caught the littlest fish.
