Supporting poles, the first step in construction of a suspension cable bridge as part of the nature trail at Poe Hollow Park east of Mount Ayr, were recently put in place by members of the Mount Ayr Community high school Future Farmers of America chapter as part of their Building Our American Communities project.

Ed CAMPBELL, Democratic candidate for governor of Iowa, announced today that Curtis RIGGS of Mount Ayr is serving as coordinator for the Campbell for Governor committee in Ringgold County.

Mount Ayr volunteer firemen were called to extinguish a fire in a 1970 Chevrolet pickup which caught fire about 9:55 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at the Maloy cemetery. Firemen reported the pickup, owned by Kenneth QUICK of Redding, was totaled.

A trophy recognizing the winner of the fifth district American Legion oratorical contest was presented in a ceremony at the Mount Ayr American Legion building here last week. Presenting the J. Dean SPILMAN Memorial American Legion Oratory Award was new district commander Jim BISHOP of Mount Ayr, speech contest winner Susan HUGHES of Bloomfield, daughter of the man for whom the award was named. HUGHES is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arlen HUGHES of Mount Ayr.

Rev. Leslie H. CALHOUN, pastor of United Methodist churches of Tingley-Wishard Chapel and Ellston, will be ordained at the 139th session of the Iowa Annual Conference on June 6 in Des Moines. He will also be admitted as an associate member of the conference. CALHOUN has served in his present appointment for the past year.

Older elementary students from Mount Ayr Community, Grand Valley Community and Diagonal Community schools participated in environmental education classes in Poe Hollow park east of Mount Ayr in the closing days of the school year. Students had classes in soils, forestry, wildlife and fisheries from experts, including Martin HINTZ, district SCS soil conservationalist, Mike McGEE, district fisheries biologist, Steve SWINCONIS, district forester with the Iowa Conservation Commission, during the outdoor classes. The program was directed by Ringgold County Conservation executive officer Rick HAWKINS of Mount Ayr.

Burl SIMMONS, honorary chairman for the National Kidney Foundation of Iowa's Gift of Life campaign in Ringgold county, announced recently that this year's passkit campaign was the most successful ever conducted in this area.
