Digital scan from original photograph of David THOMAS. David THOMAS noted that sometime after 1880, Jacob Wesley MAIN moved his family from Ripley County, Indiana to Mount Ayr,Iowa. He died in 1899, leaving the farm to his son, Joseph. Some of the other children, including Lucy, moved back to Indiana. The handwritting on the back of the above photograph reads, "Grandma MAIN's home in Iowa & Uncle Joe." Below, in different handwritting, "Grandma REED's home before marriage - Cal REED's mother."

Calvin REED's mother was Lucy B. MAIN, daughter of Jacob Wesley MAIN and Amanda THACKERY MAIN. Joseph Main was her older brother, born in 1872 in Indiana. By 1910 there were eight children in the household. Believing that the above photograph was of Joseph and his wife Lona and two of their children, David THOMAS wrote, "Based on the style of the dress, I originally guessed that the picture had been made earlier than that. I suppose Leona (TERWILLGER) MAIN was not a slave to fashion out in the prairie." After the photograph was restored it was discovered that the woman in the photograph above is actually Joseph's mother, Amanda (THACKERY) MAIN who lived with the family.

Amanda (THACKERY) MAIN was born in Ripley County, Indiana on October 27, 1839, the daughter of Joseph (1800-1881) and Mary (DuBOIS) THACKERY (1806-1894). She married in Ripley County, Indiana, on March 3/4, 1858 to Jacob Wesley MAIN. Jacob, the son of Zachariah Lewis (1800-1885) and Elizabeth (FUNKHOUSER) MAIN (1802-1867), was born May 20, 1838, Liberty Township, Ripley County, Indiana, and died January 31, 1899, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Jacob, a Civil War Veteran [possibly J. MAIN who enlisted as a Private on July 10, 1863, serving with Company D of the 104th Indiana Infantry; mustered out of service on July 18, 1863, Indianapolis, Indiana. - American Civil War Solders' Database, ancestry.com] Amanda died on October 9, 1926. Amanda and Jacob were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Amanda (THACKERY) and Jacob Wesley MAIN were the parents of eight children:
