Expedition V was the fifth long-duration stay on the International Space Station (ISS). The mission began with a launch on June 5, 2002 aboard STS-111 Space Shuttle Endeavour. Their tenure aboard ISS did not occur until docking two days later on June 7th. The crew of three remained in space for 184 days, 178 of which were aboard the ISS. Expedition V was a continuation of uninterrupted human presence in space which was begun by Expedition I in 2000. The crew returned to Earth aboard STS-113 Space Shuttle Endeavour on December 2, 2002.

They removed the panels from their temporary location on ISS's Pressurized Mating Adapter 1 prior to attachment. Peggy Whitson helped develop experiments to fly on the Space Shuttle. She served as the project scientist for the Shuttle-Mir program and was the co-chair of the U.S.-Russian Mission Science Working Group. After her selection as an astronaut candidate in August of 1996, Whitson was assigned to technical duties in the Astronaut Office Operations Planning Branch, serving as the lead for the Crew Support Team in Russia from 1998-99. She was the first NASA ISS Science Officer to work with the U. S. research community to understand and meet the requirements and objectives of each ISS experiment, helping to achieve maximum scientific returns. ~ NASA, October 0003, 2002
