P. JARVIS
P[hillip]. JARVIS, superintendent and builder of bridges, residing on section 12, Benton Township, was born in Perry County,
Ohio, August 22, 1832, son of Phillip and Mary (WOOLF) JARVIS. He resided in his native county until eighteen years of age,
assisting on the farm and attending the common schools. He was married February 28, 1856, to Miss Anna LEWIS, after which
he resided in Hocking County. The following year he came to Clarke County, Iowa, and later removed to Lucas County. In
1865 he came to Ringgold County and settled on section 12, Benton Township. He located on his farm where he now resides
July 19, 1875. He owns 137 acres in a high state of cultivation and well improved. He has a good residence, a corn barn,
orchard, small fruits, and has been engaged for several years in contracting for and building bridges. He has erected all
the county briges in Ringgold County for several years. He is the inventor of the Jarvis patent for bridges, patented
March 4, 1879; he is also the inventor and proprietor of the Jarvis wagon-brake, patented March 2, 1880. The bridges
built on the Jarvis patent are considered the best in use. Mr. and Mrs. JARVIS are the
parents of ten children - Rebecca, John, Ellen, Catherine, Levi, James, Phebe, Christopher, Samantha, and Margaret.
Moses is deceased. Mr. JARVIS is a member of the Missionary Baptist church, and politically is a Democrat.
NOTE: Phillip JARVIS, Jr. was born in Belmont County, Ohio on November 8, 1810, and died on
March 24, 1888, Belmont County, Ohio. Phillip married December 6, 1827 Mary (WOOLF) JARVIS, born in Pennsylvania in 1810,
and died at age 57 in 1867, with interment at marshalltown Cemetery, Waubonsie Township, Ringgold County, Iowa.
Phillip and Mary were the parents of nine children: Joel Alexander (1828-1913), Josiah JARVIS (1830-1905), Phillip, Catherine
(JARVIS) (1837-?), Delilah (JARVIS)
GLENDENNING (1839-1916), Isaac JARVIS (1843-?), Simon JARVIS (1846-1925), Levi JARVIS (1846-?), and Noah JARVIS (1848-?)
Joel Alexander JARVIS was born March 31, 1828, Perry County, Ohio, and died in Ringgold County, Iowa, on
April 3, 1913, Ringgold County, Iowa. Joel married in Perry County, Ohio, on April 25, 1850 to Eliza B. PARKINSON, born in Ohio October 16, 1831,
the daughter of Daniel PARKINSON (1791-1857) and Sarah (FUNDERBURG) PARKINSON. Eliza died in Ringgold County, Iowa, on
December 16, 1915, Ringgold County, Iowa. Joel and Eliza were interred at Bethel Cemetery, Grant Township of Ringgold County, Iowa.
Joel and Eliza were the parents of three children: Alexander,
Mary Catherine (JARVIS) PHILLIPS (1850-1924), and
Rebecca (1870-1894). Joel enlisted as a Private on May 1, 1862 and
was assigned to Company H of the 63rd Ohio Infantry. He was mustered out of service on August 16, 1862.
Josiah JARVIS was born June 18, 1830, Perry County, Ohio, and died September 29, 1905, Ringgold County,
Iowa. Josiah married in 1869 to Susannah Jane "Susan" RUBY, born March 18, 1850, Indiana, and died July 26, 1929. Josiah and Susan
were the parents of two daughters: Mary Joetta and Luella who was born in 1876, Ringgold County, Iowa. Josiah and
Susan were interred at Benton Cemetery, Waubonsie Township of Ringgold County, Iowa. The

Delilah JARVIS was born January 27, 1839 in Perry County, Ohio, and died January 25, 1916, Mount Ayr,
Ringgold County, Iowa. Delilah married on October 3, 1866, Ringgold County, Iowa, to James W. GLENDENNING. James, was
born May 2, 1842, Rush County, Indiana, and died January 31, 1916, Middle Fork Township of Ringgold County, Iowa. James
was the son of James W. GLENDENNING (1816-1862) and Elizabeth Ann (WEST) GLENDENNING (1812-1881). Delilah and James
were the parents of seven children: William H. (1867-1917), Mary E. (1869-?), Clara Bell (GLENDENNING) JACKSON WILSON (1871-?),
Ella Jane (GLENDENNING) HOTCHKINS (1873-1962),
Sarah C. (GLENDENNING) WAUGH (1875-1915), Greta May (1878-1879), and Verdilla Almeda (GLENDENNING) HOFFMAN (1880-1964).
Phillip and Anna (LEWIS) JARVIS were the parents of ten children:
