Hi Karla. Thanks for responding. I do subscribe to Ancestry.com and have done an exhaustive search on both that site and Family Search.com (affiliated with Ancestry.com). It may be that you were viewing the family tree that I compiled and posted on Ancestry.com when you saw all the information you referred to. My tree on Ancestry.com is called F.W.Chap after my father Francis William Chaplinski, son of Frederick and grandson of Simon. There are a few people that have the Chaplinski family from Iowa in their trees but I'm pretty sure that I've done the most research of anyone. I know that there is some references to Simon coming from Danzig West Prussia and Pauline from Sorren Poland (also in West Prussia) and that's shown in my tree as well. Unfortunately, the source of that information is highly suspect and likely the information is not correct. For example, there isn't nor never has been a town in Poland called Sorren. I've spent hours with immigration records and passenger lists searching for the family that immigrated around 1875 but none of the family show up.
I've searched through the historical newspapers from the Williams area ( the Webster City Freeman) and it appears that Simon was a substantial landowner (farms) and actually owned what was known as the Chaplinski Building in the town of Williams that was rented out to a business. I've also found short comments in the papers about Pauline's illness and ultimatey her obituary but nothing on Simon that might give me clues about his town of origin in Poland. I have Pauline's death record in the Iowa County Death Records but Simon doesn't show up. I guess that's the challenge of genealogy.
By reaching out to iagenweb.org I was hoping that someone with local knowledge might have a source of information not available on the internet. I live in the Twin Cities and so perhaps I need to make the trip to Williams to see if the cemetary may have some interesting records. Is there a library in the area that may have information on inhabitants that may not be available on the internet? Thanks again for responding and please let me know if you have any ideas as to where I might find additional information.
