Dear Sir: I would like to know if your cemetery records show burial records with dates of birth and death of the following, and any other relatives of Lewis Todhunter: Lewis Todhunter April 6, 1817 – Jan 29, 1902, Elizabeth Todhunter born about 1822, married May 10, 1842, Louisa Smith Todhunter, John Jury Todhunter, Jury Todhunter (Father of Lewis), Charles D. Letter from Ralph Gilliland, Trustee of I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Indianola, Iowa to Amy Noll, Jan 25, 1951
Miss Amy Noll, State House, Des Moines, Iowa
Dear Miss Noll; - We have your card requesting information about the Todhunter family. So far as we know there are no relatives living in this area at present. Our records do not carry the birth dates nor information about near kin. We do have the following burial records, all on Lot #765 I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Indianola, Iowa, Space #1 …?, Space #2, Louisa Smith Todhunter died March 31, 1899, Space #3 Elizabeth Todhunter died March 2, 1885, Space #4 Clay G. Todhunter died Oct 1, 1859, Space #5 Margaret L. Todhunter died Feb 8, 1862 (believe to be a wife of Lewis T. or maybe of, Space #6 Lewis Todhunter died Jan 29, 1902
A search of records of the local Lodge of which Lewis and J.J. (known locally as “Jerry”) shows that Lewis died on June 29, 1902. This difference could result in mistaking “June” for “Jan.”. Also these records show that J.J.T. died July 12, 1917 and it is my belief that he is buried in an unrecorded grave on space 1. Sincerely yours, Ralph Gilliland, Trustee, I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Indianola, Iowa

Letter from Alger Truitt to the W.R.C. (Woman’s Relief Corps), Davenport, Iowa, Nov 25, 1913
Dear Sisters of the W.R.C.:
As I have received a number of cards from you, thought to take this method of answering and thanking you for the remembrance of my 68th anniversary and for your well wishes and will be glad when the day comes that we can come back to our home and grasp the hand of all our old friends, tried and true looking at the date of this puts me to thinking that 50 years ago I was at Chatanooga, Tennessee, we have here this morning just such weather. Sherman was trying to turn the right, Hooker the left, Thomas had taken Orchard Knob the day before. It was near the center so we lay hoping that one or the other of the right or left might be successful and turn the ridge. We was almost sure Thomas would not, of his accord, make an assault for such a place, but Grant was there and we had never served under him, so the day wore away. Sherman and Hooker had come to a standstill. I can hear as it were now some of the growling and angry words that were being used as it was talked along the line that Grant and Sherman thought we had been cooped up in Chatanooga so long we would not fight. Along about 3 o’clock 6 guns were fired. It was the signal for Thomas to move in a minute. That line was going towards Missionary Ridge the works were taken at the foot of the hill and in amongst were climbing the ridge, the enemy were busy but it did not have any effect or if it did it was to hasten the advance at the top of the ridge. The enemy made his fight behind his works the army was soon over amongst them and they were on the run. The ridge was over with many Prisoners and guns. Our fight was not over, we had to fight short rations until the 23 Jan 1864. It was very hard I assure you. With best wishes and love to all the W.R.C. I remain as ever Alger Truitt.
