Pension file shows wife died Aug 3, 1896, one child, Glenn C. born March 9, 1867. In 1859 veteran resided at Terre Coupee, St. Jo County, Indiana where he had resided since 1846, worked for Jas. Carskaddon on farm 1859-1860, drove team hauling logs until April 2, 1860 when contracted to chop wood and clear land 18 miles north east of Terre Coupee in Berrien County, Michigan. Moved after discharge to Warren County, Iowa. In Oct 1869 owned farm 40 acres in La Porte County, Indiana 4 miles west of Terre Coupee, took trip by wagon to southern Minnesota, returned Spring 1873, then went to Kansas, stayed about 2 months, received some benefit, in 1874 moved to Palmyra on a farm 1 ½ miles from it – Palmyra 1877-Aug 1880. Statement of 1880.

Freel, James (father of James M., Civil War veteran) farmer, Sec. 15, P.O. Hartford; was born in Clermont County, Ohio Jan 11, 1810. In 1814 his parents removed to Fayette County, Indiana and afterwards to Hamilton County, where he was raised. He came to this county in 1848 and located where he now lives; he has been twice married; first, to Mrs. Mary Gwinn a native of Virginia, who died (at birth of twins) and a native of Virginia who died and left six children, five of whom are now living; Paulina, Hester, William, James and Malinda, and two deceased. He was married a second time, March 30, 1849 to Miss Louise Moore, native of Pennsylvania; they have 8 children, living, Samuel, Benoni, Albert, Reason, Emma, Adaline, Margaret and Eli; and one deceased; Clara J.. He owns 80 acres of land, his father, Benoni was in War of 1812; his grandfather on both sides were in the Revolutionary War.
