Littleport: George Bente was born in Cox Creek township January 12, 1874, the son of Wm. and Maguerite Bente, pioneer residents of Clayton County. He received his education in the rural schools.
He was married on September 29, 1897 to Mary Scheer. They were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 1947. Two children were born to this union: a son, Elmer, and a daughter, Eunice, who died in infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Bente were successful farmers in this community. In 1944 they moved to Elkader, where they have made their home ever since.
Mr. Bente's health began to fail the last two years. Eight weeks ago he was taken to Xavier hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, where he underwent treatment. He died early Thursday morning, December 25, 1952, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 13 days.
The deceased was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church. Mr. Bente was also active in many community organizations.
Mr. Bente leaves to mourn his wife, and son, Elmer, one grandchild, Mary Trese Bente, two brothers, Louie and Frank Bente of Elkader, Kaythrine (Mrs. Robert Englert), Elizabeth (Mrs. Robert Englert), Elizabeth (Mrs. Morse Henser) of Chicago, Mary (Mrs. Archer) of Florida, and Annie (Mrs. Ed. Meese) of Littleport.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Henry and Mike, and one sister, Mrs. Ida Miller.
Service were held at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was at the East Side cemetery.
Pallbearers were Arno Funk, Bernard Hahn, Valley Gottschalk, Art Meyer Ray Tieden and A. A. Shultz.

Waddell, Mrs. Margaret Koehn and Mrs. Mabel Engelhardt of Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Ihde, Mrs. Laura Toma and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Oelke of Garnavillo, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Reardon, Mr. Richard Looby and Lester Oelke of Farmersburg, Arno Oelke, Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Oelke and Mrs. Mary Bruns of Monona, and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Leonard, Waterloo.
