Miller and Harry Hubbard were co-chairmen of a drive to raise funds for scouting. The community contributed $195.60 to this worthy cause. Several members were honored at a court held at Calmar in 1954: Karl Schroeder received a life award; Dirk Amundsen and Billy Rothmeyer advanced to Star rank; and merit badges were awarded to Jim Barthelme, Micky Figge, Gerald Thuente, Elwyn Dotzenrod, Karl Schroeder, Wayne Hemry, Bill Rothmeyer, David Sevatson and Dirk Amundsen. A Cub Scout Pack was formed in the summer of 1953. Gus Rogness was elected committee chairman of the sponsoring group. Walter Lestina served as packmaster. Fueled by the contagious enthusiasm of Mr. Lestina, the Cubs became very active. Advancement awards were presented to Richard Dotzenrod, Karl Wiltgen, John Jaster, David Thuente, Dennis Anfinson, Donald Kipp, Gary Rogness and Eddie Jaster. Bob Ward received the Webelo's badge. The charter was renewed in 1954 and Ralph Wiltgen agreed to assist Cubmaster Lestina. Mrs. Lestina, Mrs. Don Martens and Mrs. Walter Witt were named as den-mothers of the 27 boys. The group enjoyed a fishing expedition to a private pond near Elkader. Mr. & Mrs. Witt, Mr. & Mrs. Lestina, Mrs. Martens, Wayne Sender, Harry Hubbard, Irvin Anfinson and Emil Jaster served as drivers, line untanglers and angling experts. Seventy pounds of trout were netted by the happy fishermen. The Ossian Progressive Study Club sponsored a troop of Brownies in 1953. Mrs. Don Amundsen agreed to serve as leader with Mrs. Richard Becker as her assistant. Comitteewomen were Mrs. Lloyd Strand, Mrs. Harry Hubbard and Mrs. Gus Rogness. The following girls joined the troop: Cindy Amundsen, Janet Barthelme, Jean Barthelme, Judy Becker, Kay Hubbard, Karen Cole, Peggy Gilbert, Linda Larson, Waneta Moellers, Marilyn Rogness, Marilyn Suchan, Karen Schmitz, Jean Staska and Rosalyn Wiltgen. A troop of Girl Scouts was formed the next year following a meeting in the city park of all interested girls. Mrs. Victor Halverson was the organizer and leader of this group. The Scouts, both boys and girls, are still active in the community at the time of this writing. The organization continues to play a role in the formation of sterling character in Ossian's youths. 1933 Electric lights were strung above the ice skating rink at the creamery pond courtesy of the Ossian Business Association. Electrician Doane was assisted by recreational committee members—Dr. Holtey, George Lansing and Francis Klein. The Businessmen's Club will give certificates worth 15¢ in trade to hungry "knights of the road". Citizens are advised to refer panhandlers to the mayor for this bounty. The Figge Auto Co. advised the public that a full sized six cylinder Chevrolet coupe with rumble seat can now be purchased for only $475. Several local dealers advertised tire sales. Otto Holder offered Pharis brand in a range of $2.47 to $4.78; Miller tires, $3.65 to $7.68. Figge Auto listed Firestone tires from $3.15 to $9.20. The Dessel Auto Co. priced Goodyear tires at $5.55 to $11.50. Arthur Linderbaum was stopped by highwaymen south of Waverly. He was armed and warned the bandits to let him pass. One of the thugs opened fire. Three bullets passed through the Linderbaum auto—two of these slugs clipped Art's overcoat as he sped away. The Roosevelt administration succeeded in legalizing the sale of beer with an alcohol content not over 3.2%. The council issued permits to seven local taverns. Banker Figge reported with pride that of the 53 banks in Iowa that were allowed to remain open during the "banking holiday", three were the Figge banks at Ossian, Calmar and West Bend. | |
