The Citizen's State Bank, closed during the holiday, was allowed to reopen in June. This institution eventually paid its customers 106% of their deposits.

In efforts to reduce expenses, the salary of the town clerk was reduced to $140 a year. The size of the bulbs in Ossian's white way was lowered from 250 to 200 watts.

The salaries of the public school teachers were also cut. The two male instructors now receive $4.725; the five females share $3825 for an average of $765.

The faculty for the coming year includes: G. F. Fjelstul, superintendent; A. B. Davidson, principal; Elwood Johnson, Loretto McGary, Inez Baker and Rachel Elmer. Jess Limbeck has been hired as janitor.

The students receiving diplomas from the public school were: Norman Brown, Walter Daniels, Lillian Dvorak, Sadie Gullickson, Thearon Hauge, Eileen Lee, Helen Lotvedt, Mabel Peck, Myrtle Sersland and Anna Valland.

The graduates from the parochial school were: Marcel Barthelme, Quentin Barthelme, Marjorie Beckman, Mary Becvar, Bernadette Bonfig, Bernice Collins, Olive Eimers, Gregory Hemesath, John Kelly, Florence Miller and Lucille Wagner.

Five of Ossian's young ladies entered a popularity contest for queen of the county fair. They were: Evelyn Aslakson, Lucille Wagner, Geraldine Dessel, Emerenda Barthelme and Alice Lee. Emerenda was chosen as Miss Winneshiek.

The businessmen's club met to discuss the President's National Industrial Recovery Act. This measure prohibited merchants, located in towns with a population under 2500, from reducing business hours below 52 a week. It further required that the wages of all employees must be increased by 20%, providing the new salary does not exceed $12 a week. Sixteen local firms agreed to become members of the I. R. A.. They were: Max Wolff, Union Produce, Figge Auto Co., Anderson Sc Klein, Winnie Evans, Dr. Schneberger, Dr. Miller, Gunderson Bros., Julius Geskin, Ossian Elevator, Fleischer & Helwig, S. B. Bergland, Otto Holder, the Ossian Bee and Cahill & Son.

A meeting was held at the city hall to consider emergency relief for the community. The relief committee has allotted $400 for a-local town project. It was decided to install a rock crusher at the creamery quarry and surface several streets in Ossian. Workers were paid 30¢ an hour, for a maximum of 30 hours a week, in scrip redeemable for merchandise at Ossian's stores.

Mayor Nicholson, a member of the county emergency relief committee, announced that 125 pounds of salt pork will be distributed to twenty five families in the community.

John Staska has opened an athletic gymnasium just south of his machine shop. He announced a fight card featuring six boxing and one wrestling events. Bouts are" scheduled between "Larry" Werner and Marcel Bengfort; Lyle Holder and George Dessel; and Bill Holtey vs Jack Riley. Admission was 25 and 15¢ .

Ordinance no. 102, licensing and regulating public dance halls, was adopted. This act provided for a license fee of $4 a night; a charge of $2 for a police officer and $2 for a matron when required; closing hour to be no later than 11:55 on Saturdays; all unmarried girls under 14 years must be accompanied by a parent; no intoxicating beverages allowed on the premises; dances such as the"Grizzly Bear", "Bunny Hug","Texas Tommy", "Shimmy", "Toddle", "Lorraine", "Cheek to cheek", or similar dances of an indecent nature, shall not be permitted.

The estate of longtime clothier Frank Figge advertised a closing-out sale. Some of the bargains offered follow; men's suits—$3.95; overcoats—$6.95; sheeplined coats—$4.95; shirts--19¢; trousers--98¢; shoes & oxfords--49¢ & 98¢; rubbers—98¢; ladies' dresses—$1.39 to $6.88; and millinery—9¢.

The Ossian Bakery offered one pound loaves of bread (white, whole wheat, rye, or potato) for 8¢; and tea rolls—5¢.

Grovdahl Bros, listed lower grocery prices. Among the bargains were: salt—2 lbs. for 180; soap flakes—5 lhs. for 25¢; salmon—9¢; peanut butter— 2 lbs. for 18¢; navy beans—5 lbs., 15¢; pork & beans—4 cans, 18¢; candy bars—3 for 10¢; sardines—6 tins, 25¢; and corn flakes—9¢
