1. Dr. J. M. EMMERT, Atlantic, Iowa, was born in Washington county, Md., June 13, 1846. He was reared on a farm and attended common schools until he was 16 years old, when he went to the Pennsylvania State Normal school at Millersville and remained two years. He commenced studying medicine in 1869 and graduated from Jefferson Medical college, Philadelphia, in 1872. He came west in the spring of 1872 and located at Hamburg, Iowa, and practiced there until 1874 when he moved to Atlantic, where he has since resided. He is a member of the American Medical Association and read the oration on State Medicine at the Saratoga meeting in 1902. He has been a member of the State Medical society since 1875 and was elected its president in 1889. He is a member of the Missouri Valley and Botna Valley Medical societies and helped to organize them. He was appointed a member of the state board of health by Governor BOIES in 1892 and resigned in 1898 because of his election as state senator in 1897. He is a member of the four Masonic bodies in Atlantic, and is medical examiner for a number of eastern insurance companies.
2. Dr. A. P. MACOMBER, Atlantic, Iowa, was born May 19, 1831, in New Salem, Franklin County, Mass. Was a teacher in the schools of Massachusetts for several years. Studied medicine with Dr. Joseph N. BATES, of Barry, Mass., a man who stood very high in his profession. Graduated from the New York University Medical College in the class of 1853. Practiced medicine in Winchester, New Hampshire, eight years. Removed to Malden , Mass. where he practiced five years. An attack of pleuro-pneumonia came near costing him his life. He was obliged to change climate and removed to Hackensack, New Jersey, where he practiced his profession twelve years. Was President of the New Jersey State Medical Society. In 1878 he removed to Atlantic, Iowa, where he is engaged at the present time in the practice of medicine. During his professional career he has had sixteen medical students , some of them having acquired national reputations. One, Dr. J. Heber SMITH, was Professor of Materia Medica in Boston University for twenty-five years, or until his death in 1900. Also J. Sidney MITCHELL, President of the Chicago Homeopathic College for twenty-five years. Dr. MACOMBER was president of the Hahnemann Medical Association of Iowa. He is a member of the Session of the Presbyterian Church of Iowa, and of the I.O.O.F. Lodge , No. 80, Atlantic, Iowa. The first ten years of his professional life he practiced Allopathy. But after a careful investigation, extending over five years, he added to his equipment the resources of Homepathy.
3. Dr. Ulysses S. MULLINS, Atlantic, Iowa, was born in Jasper County, Iowa, Nov. 5, 1870. In 1875 his parents came to Cass County and located in Benton Township, and in 1880 removed to Atlantic. He graduated from the Atlantic High School and then attended business college at Davenport for two years. He was clerk in the Whitney Bank for two years. Afterward he took a course in pharmacy at the Iowa State University, then went to Chicago and attended Rush Medical College, graduating there from in 1895. He was associated for two years with Dr. J.M. EMMERT and took a Post Graduate course in various New York hospitals, since which time he has been in active practice of his profession. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias, Modern Woodmen, Masons and Modern Brotherhood. He is one of the rising physicians of the younger class and a conscientious gentleman in and out of his practice , as well as a progressive citizen.
4. Frank William PORTERFIELD, was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, January 29, 1857. His father was Samuel N. PORTERFIELD of Ohio, and mother, Mary D. PORTERFIELD of Pennsylvania; they were the first white couple married in the state of Nebraska, having been married in Belleview, twelve miles below the present site of Omaha at the old Indian mission in 1850, on the 5th day of November. Samuel PORTERFIELD was a 49er, having crossed the plains that year, returning the following year and later being one of the founders of the city of Council Bluffs of which city he continued to be a resident until his death in 1897. Dr. PORTERFIELD was educated in the public schools of his native city from which he graduated in 1873, and at the Iowa State college which he entered the same year. His medical education was acquired in the medical department of the Northwestern University from which he graduated in 1879. He became a resident of Atlantic in 1881, where he has since resided. Has been medical examiner for the United States Pension Bureau for the last sixteen years, having served under CLEVELAND, HARRISON, McKINLEY and ROOSEVELT. Was professor of applied anatomy in the Creighton Medical college for two years ( 1901 and 1902); was a member of the board of education of Atlantic for six years and president of that body for two terms.
5. Dr. William M. SEMONES, Atlantic, Iowa, was born June 11, 1858, in the Cumberland Mountains of East Tennessee. Came North during the war, and lived at Omaha until grown. Graduated in the Bible Department of Oskaloosa College in '81, and was an active minister of the Christian Church in Iowa, until 1897, except two years of special study at Butler University, Indianapolis, Ind. In 1893 he entered the State University of Iowa, graduating in 1897 from the Homepathic Medical Department. Moved to Colorado, where he practiced medicine at Colorado City and later at Denver, continuing however, in the ministry. He was compelled to leave Colorado on account of Mrs. SEMONES' broken health. About this time ( Dec. '99 ) Dr. Bertrand O. MORSE, because of failing health, felt that he must seek a milder climate. Dr. SEMONES then entered the partnership with Dr. MACOMBER, since which time he has been an active member of the firm of MACOMBER & SEMONES. Before moving to Atlantic, Dr. SEMONES had taken special instruction in Eye and Ear work. Since that he has spent two months in the clinics of the Homeopathic Eye and Ear College of New York City: and last year took a course of one month in the Chicago Post Graduate Eye and Ear College. He is a member of the American Homeopathic Opthalmological and Laryngological Society. Is an active member of the Christian Church. Is interested in Y.M.C.A. work, and all temperance movements; and is a recognized member of the following fraternities: Masons, Eastern Star, Odd Fellows, Modern Woodmen, and Woodmen of the World.
6. Dr. Thomas B. MORRIS, Atantic, Iowa, was born in Liberty, Iowa, December 17, 1866, and lived there until he was twenty-three years of age. He attended Simpson college at Indianola and graduated in 1894. He studied medicine at Rush Medical college, Chicago, and graduated in 1900. He was in the hospital of the Illinois Steel company for one year and then spent six months in the Silver Cross hospital at Joliet, ILL. He located at Verona, Ill., but becoming dissatisfied, came to Atlantic in September, 1901, and has resided and practiced in Atlantic ever since. He belongs to the Masons, Maccabees and fraternal insurance associations. He is accounted among Cass county's ablest physicians and is among her most enterprising citizens.
7 Dr. C. V. WILDER, Atlantic, Iowa, was born in Derby Line, Vermont, September 22, 1851. He left there in 1855 for Delton, Wisconsin, where he lived until 18 years old. From there he went to Jefferson Liberal Institute, Jefferson, Wisconsin, and attended school for three years. The balance of the time was spent clerking and keeping books in a general store at New Lisbon, Wisconsin. He came to Knoxville, Iowa, in February, 1874, and commenced the study of medicine with his father. From there he moved to Atlantic, Iowa, in January, 1875. He engaged in the practice of medicine in the fall of 1876, but did not take his degree as practitioner until February, 1882, after having attended three courses of lectures in Hahnemann Medical college, Chicago, Ill. He has been in the practice of medicine since 1876 with the exception of time spent at college work. He is a member of the American Institute of Homeopathy, and belongs to the Elks and I.O.O.F. lodges.
8 Dr. C. L. CAMPBELL, Atlantic, Iowa, was born in Plain Grove, Penn., August 22, 1856. When seventeen years old he entered the Plain Grove academy and remained two years. He completed his literary course at Grove City and Westminister colleges in Pennsylvania, and then began the study of medicine with Dr. James WALLACE of New Castle, PA. In 1878 he attended one course at the Wooster Medical college at Cleveland, Ohio, and two years at Miami Medical college at Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from the latter college March 21, 1881. He practiced medicine at Brownstable, PA., until 1883, and then came to Iowa and located at Lewis, in this county, in which place he continued in active practice until 1898, when he moved to Atlantic and formed a partnership with Dr. PORTERFIELD, which continued until January 17th of this year. He now has offices in the Gillespie building.
