Jack Schmidt

Arno Jack Schmidt, age 63, 509 East Burlington Ave., Fairfield, died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 1991 at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield. He was born September 8, 1927 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Arno John and Elzaida Barrett Schmidt. He was a lifelong resident of Fairfield. He also had a cabin at Roberts Park near Keosauqua.

Jack graduated from Fairfield High School in 1945, served in the Air Force during World War II, and then attended the University of Iowa, where he was affiliated with Sigma Chi Fraternity. Jack worked for the Dexter Company in Fairfield as purchasing agent and in sales, he worked for Louden Machinery Company in sales and as purchasing agent. He later worked in sales for the Fairfield Engineering Company. Following retirement Jack worked at the VFW Club in Fairfield.

A member and licensed lay leader of the Episcopal Church, he was a member of the BPO Elks No. 1192; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 15, AF&AM York Rites Bodies of Masonry; Council Chapter Commandry; KAABA Shrine, Fairfield Shrine Club, former member of the Fairfield Shrine Wheel Horse Patrol and former member of the 34th Division Army National Guard Band. He formerly operated the Shell Service Station at second and Broadway in Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jane Schrader. Surviving are his son, Karl B. Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Susan Jayne Schmidt-McDowell of Fort Worth, Texas and Sara Ann Schmidt-Cox of Springfield, Mo.; two grandsons and his brother, Gene A. Schmidt of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 21, 1992 at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield, the Rev. Margaret Burler of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Ottumwa officiating.

Masonic services were conducted Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home, conducted by Elmer Louth of Clinton Lodge No. 15.

A memorial has been established to the Schmidt Family Endowment Fund at the Fairfield Public Library.
