1990 JE 7Retired Vice Admiral Herbert Spencer Duckworth Dies
Retired Vice Admiral Herbert Spencer Duckworth died May 29, 1990 at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. at the age A age of 90.
A memorial service for Duckworth was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday May 31, 1990 at the chapel at Jacksonville Naval Air Station, where Duckworth served as commanding officer from 1947 to 1948.
Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery, but those arrangements were incomplete at the present time.
Duckworth was born in Keosauqua, Iowa, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1922.
He was air officer on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington during the battle of the Coral Sea in 1942, and commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Cowpens in 1945. He was credited with flying the first U.S. flag over a Japanese air base after the U.S. occupation of Japan following World War II.
Duckworth retired in 1952 to Jacksonville Art Museum from 1956 to 1958.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle, of Jacksonville; two sons, John A. Duckworth of New Smyrna Beach and J. Frank Surface of Jacksonville; and two daughters, Barbara S. Kidd and Jacquelyn S. Johns, both of Jacksonville.
The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Medical Schools.
Memorial services are planned for Friday, March 9th at 10:30 a.m. at the Good Samaritan Center Chapel, Rev. Charles McCracken and Rev. Dale Ellsworth officiating. Memorials may be made to Van Buren Good Samaritan Center.
Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, Iowa.
