Mabel McIntosh Sanders
Mabel McIntosh Sanders, daughter of Thomas Addison and Maude Barker McIntosh, was born Feb. 3, 1907 in Bakersfield, Calif. and died Feb. 24, 1990 at the Van Buren Memorial Hospital. She was 83 years and 21 days old.
Mabel was five years old when her father died. Her mother moved the family back to Mt. Zion, Iowa where Mabel grew to adulthood.
Mabel graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1925. After graduating from Chillicothe, Mo. Business College she worked for an insurance company in Grinnell, Iowa.
It was in Grinnell she met her future husband, Newell Sanders. They were married May 30, 1927. They lived in Montezuma for a short time, then moved to Burlington, Iowa, where they lived for many years.
They moved to Salem, Oregon where Mabel worked in the postal department for seven years. They moved to San Jose, Calif. where she worked in an office for 14 years.
Upon retirement they returned to Fairfield, Iowa. After her husband's death she moved to the Country Lane Apartments. For the last two years she had lived at the Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua.
She was a member of the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church and a member of the Mt. Zion Ladies Aid.
Preceding her in death were two sisters, Bernice Borders of Keosauqua and Ruth Ellsworth, Lincoln, Nebr. and a brother, Russell McIntosh of Keosauqua.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Hazel McIntosh, three nieces, Mary Louise Wolfe, Punta Gorda, Fla., Jo Ann Zimmerman, Des Moines, Iowa, Sandra Cullen, Des Moines, Iowa; three nephews, Rev. Dale Ellsworth, Algona, Iowa, Lloyd Ellsworth, Mountain Home, Ark. and Jim McIntosh, New Orleans, La., several cousins and friends.
