Wow! You did find a lot of information. After my posting, I found the Orphan Home and census. I'm not sure where my mother-in-law got her information that it was in Vermillion, but that was quite a way from where the home was actually located. She knew that her mother had been confirmed in Canton and the date and the high school from which she graduated, and those didn't make sense either--now the light comes on!
Bertha died in 1897, when the girls were very small, and he was unable to care for them by himself, thus, he sent them to the Orphan Home. Although, according to the 1900 census, he was living with Bertha's parents. He remarried but never took the girls back to live with him.
