Funeral Services for W. H. Groomes Sunday Afternoon

One of the largest gatherings that has assembled at a funeral for some time in Nevada was that at the Lilly Funeral home Sunday afternoon for the services held for W. H. Groomes, 61, Grant township farmer, who dropped dead from a heart attack, at his home southwest of Nevada Thursday morning.

Over four hundred people were present for the services which were in charge of Rev. C. E. Lookingbill, with the singing by Mrs. L. E. Smith and Mrs. Garnet Hathaway at the organ.

Casket bearers selected from among his longtime neighbors and friends were James Day, William Lemonds, Robert Lemonds, Frank Kirk, John Brady and Victor Sloniger.

Hundreds of old neighbors and friends joined with the members of the family to pay a final tribute of respect to one whom they had long known and held in the highest of esteem.

The body was laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery.

The following brief sketch of the life of the deceased was read by the minister during the service.

"Winfield Henry Scott Groomes was a son of Erwin and Sarah Groomes. He was one of a family of 13, of which four survive.

"He grew to manhood at Monticello, Illinois, and was united in marriage to Lydia May Ruch on February 12, 1908, at Urbana, Ill., where they made their home for six years. They then moved to Iowa, locating near Nevada in Story county. To this union six children were born. One preceded him in death. Left to mourn his departure in his wife, Lydia May Groomes and five children. These children are Bernice Myers, Alvin, Forrest, and Dale Groomes of Nevada and Glenn Groomes of Cambridge. Also two sisters, Pearl Frazier, Ames, and Bessie Mackey, Mansfield, Illinois, and two brothers, Elijah Groomes, Ames, and Tom Groomes, Mansfield, Illinois, survive together with eight grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, a host of friends and relatives.

"Mr. Groomes departed this life at 9:30 a. m. Thursday, June 25, at the age of 61 years, 7 months, and 24 days."
