Caldwell's Village in the 1851 plat by the US Government was said to be adjacent to the Old Blockhouse in what is downtown Council Bluffs today. Billy Caldwell died there on 27 September 1841, according to "Early Days at Council Bluffs," by Charles H. Babbitt, 1916. In the more recent, extensively researched, history of Council Bluffs, Iowa, called "Silent Hills Speak" it is noted that there is no documentation known to exist which names the exact burial location of Chief Billy Caldwell. The old Blockhouse site was located on what is now East Pierce Street, between Grace and Union St., along the Indian Creek (which has since been tamed by a canal and runs underground through most of Council Bluffs). If Chief Caldwell was re-interred in a Catholic Cemetery, it is most likely St. Joseph Cemetery.
