Thursday, July 8, 1999KIRBY, Paul L., of Edmond, Oklahoma died July 6, 1999 at Edmond Medical Center. He was 75. He is survived by his wife, Lieseiotte (Lilo) and son Russell of Edmond and his daughter, Sharon of Albany, NY.
Paul was born in the little town of Peru, Iowa in 1924 to Rev. and Mrs. L. Merrill Kirby, and as a son of a minister, moved to many different towns until he graduated from St. Charles high school in 1941.
He married Phyllis Yvonne Harriger in 1942 and was drafted into service by the Army in 1943. His daughter, Sharon, was born in 1945 as he served in the European campaign. At the end of the war, he contracted tuberculosis and spent six years in the VA Hospital in Tucson,AZ . During that time, his marriage with Yvonne ended. He later married his second wife, Lieseiotte, in 1956.
He completed his studies in physics at the University of Arizona in 1962. They moved that year to Edmond where Paul started teaching physics at the University of Central Oklahoma, then Central State College. After frequent moves all of his life, he vowed to stay in Edmond, and he never again moved again.
His son, Russell L., was born in 1970 while he graded test papers in the waiting room. Paul was affectionately known as the physics professor who called his tests “Luaus” and dressed for the occasion with a goofy hat or clothes. He retired from UCO in 1992.
Paul also was a member of First United Methodist Church of Edmond, teaching and serving various groups within the church.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Edmond,OK, Friday, July 9th, 1999 at !!:00 AM. His ashes will be buried at Gracelawn Cemetery.
