Gilbert Hanson dies after a long illness
Funeral services were held today (Monday) for Gilbert Hanson, 71, who had been a resident of Rock Rapids since 1893. He died Thursday at MPC hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Hanson was born in Luverne, Minn., on December 22, 1892. He was the son of Knute and Julia Hanson.
Mr. Hanson graduated from Rock Rapids high school in 1913. He then went on to business college in Cedar Rapids and was employed at Cedar Rapids by the Iowa Railway and Light Company. He went into service with the army engineers in World War I. After serving in the army, he returned to Rock Rapids and entered the tailoring and dry-cleaning business with his father, and his older brother, Knute Jr.
Mr. Hanson was an active member of the American Legion in Rock Rapids and served the community as a volunteer fireman for thirty years.
His marriage to Vernonie Arp took place Dec. 4, 1922. They were parents of two daughters.
Survivors include his widow; daughters, Velva Mae, Mrs. Fred Jess of Jefferson, and Beverly Jean, Mrs. John Coulson of Rock Rapids; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred of Rock Island, Ill., and Olaf of Beresford, S. D. and five sisters, Mrs. Mary Zeug, Miss Linda Hanson, and Mrs. Amelia Moeller, all of Rock Rapids; Mrs. Clara Anderson of Santee, Calif., and Mrs. I. L. Durham of Lemon Grove, Calif.
He was preceded in death by brothers Knute and Hans.
Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery under the direction of the Jongewaard Funeral Home. Members of the American Legion Post conducted military rites at the cemetery. (Source: Lyon County Reporter, Rock Rapids, IA, Mon., June 22, 1964, pg. 1)
