S. K. Shaver, pioneer editor and one of the oldest residents of Columbus Junction, passed away at his home there at 12:30 o'clock last Thursday after an illness extending over four weeks. Mr. Shaver was 93 years of age. He was born at Somerset, Somerset county, Pennsylvania, January 3, 1833, and came to Iowa in 1844, settling on a farm in Johnson county in the vicinity of what is now the Amish settlement. Mr. Shaver moved to Iowa City where he was connected with the Iowa City Republican, Columbus Junction, IA and was editor for several years. He was said to be the oldest editor in the state and he helped set up the first code of the state of Iowa.

On October 25, 1857, he was married to Miss Adeline Donaghey, of Washington county, and that year he sold the paper and they returned to the farm. To this union were born four children: Birney P., who passed away in 1912; George, who died in infancy; Bonnett, who died when six years of age, and Carlis, who is now employed on the railroad at Eldon.

He is survived by his wife and two sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Hull of Marshalltown and Mrs Eleanore Reinking of Des Moines. In 1900 they moved from the farm to Wellman and in 1910 they came to Columbus Junction, where he has resided ever since. Mr. Shaver was an upright citizen and a firm believer in temperance. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 12:30 from the Pleasant Hill church near Wellman and the remains were interred in the Pleasant Hill cemetery.
