Martha Newcomb Garrett, youngest daughter of Col. Elisha and Nancy Garrett was born at Garrettsville, O., August 29th, 1838 and passed away at her home here in Wapello, July 18, 1915, aged 76 years, 10 months and 19 days. She was married on May 26th, 1857, at Garrettsville, Ohio, to James Simpson Hurley of Wapello, Iowa, who brought his young bride to his home here in Wapello, where she has lived for the past 58 years. To this union nine children were born, four sons dying in infancy and one daughter Anna, the wife of Paul Gauss passed away in January 1904. The children who remain to mourn their loss are Elizabeth; Elanor, wife of J. E. Garrett; Walter H., all of Wapello and Martha, wife of Edgar D. Shipman of St. Paul, Minnesota. There are also three grandchildren living: Hurley Barbara Gauss, Raymond Paul Gauss and Walter Edgar Shipman.

Her husband departed this life in 1891. The wife continued in the old home, her daughter Elizabeth being her sympathetic companion. In early life Mrs. Hurley was converted and united with the Baptist church, to which all her people belonged, her grandmother owning a Baptist church in Garrettsville, Ohio, which town was named for her grandfather. Twenty-nine years ago Sister Hurley, for the sake of advancing God's Kingdom in the world and strengthening His cause here in Wapello, united with the First Methodist Episcopal church .

On February 23rd she fell in her home, breaking her limb. After this she was continually confined to her bed, never being able to even to sit up. A complication of diseases caused her a great suffering which was only stayed when the Messenger called her home. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, July 20th, at 2 p. m., conducted by her pastor, Rev. A.W. McBlain. The services were short but impressive, carried out according to the expressed wish of the family. Mrs. Hurley was laid to rest amidst a profusion of God's choicest blossoms, at peace with man and God.
