Page 1Samuel Dowell, a section foreman on the Rock Island railroad at Morning Sun, was killed there Friday morning when he was struck by the engine of a freight train which was doing some switching in the yards. The accident occurred about eight o'clock. Mr. Dowell was repairing a switch and did not hear the approach of the engine. His brother, who was working nearby, saw the danger and called to Mr. Dowell but not in time. The engine struck Dowell in the back and threw him several feet, injuring him internally and breaking a leg. The ankle of the other leg was put out of joint.
The injured man was placed on the north bound passenger train to be taken to the hospital in Cedar Rapids, but he died before reaching there at 12:45 o'clock. According to the station agent, who saw the accident, no blame attaches to the engine crew. Dowell had been section foreman for thirty years and was about fifty years of age. He leaves a widow, seven daughters and one son. The funeral was held Tuesday in order to allow time for the arrival of one of his daughters from Canada.
