On My Ancestors' Shoulders: From Virginia to Iowa - The James Robert Patterson Family
Soon to be released
In this 323 page book, the author takes a reverse historical tour from the present day back five generations to the early 19th Century. The author’s mother, Muriel Delilah Patterson, called Pat by friends, or Tootie, by family members, begins the Patterson journey back into time. By using many of his mother’s and grandmother’s countless photos from albums, the author provides a history of his Patterson family connections.
True, the author’s last name is Coe. But he spent so much of his life attending Patterson family events that he feels, mainly, that he is more Patterson than Coe. Tootie’s father, John Edgar Patterson, or “Edd” as he was called, collected many family relics and records over time. His father, David Gose Patterson, who lived the last 30 years of his life in Wright County, Iowa, kept letters from his brothers and cousins dating back to the 1880’s, as well as his land and tax records. Edd had the originals of those letters and documents. Among them can be found records showing that David was certified to teach school in 1875, was a Justice of the Peace, and President of his local Board of Education. In addition to that he had an Exhorter’s License from the Methodist Episcopal Church. Those artifacts were passed down to Dave Coe. Many of those letters, records, and documents are included in this book.
Along the way, on our backwards trip through time, Dave Coe, the author, provides a family pictorial narrative of Tootie’s aunts, uncles, and cousins. Those people developed, nurtured and strengthened the family bond over the years – even though, in some instances, they lived hundreds of miles away from each other.
This book examines the small amount of information that we have about James Robert Patterson, who brought Dave’s great grandpa David and his siblings to Iowa by covered wagon in 1854. Dave takes issue with “commonly accepted” conclusions, advanced by some family researchers, regarding James Robert’s birth date, family origins and connections. By examining documents, he explains why he is unconvinced. By raising some questions, Dave hopes to provoke further research into the life of James Robert Patterson.
Dave Coe hopes that the memories of the people detailed within his book will live on for generations to come. For that reason, you are encouraged to buy a copy for each of your children and your grandchildren. Only a limited number of copies are being printed, and several of them are already spoken for. The author is not interested in profiting from the sale of this book. He is passing on the per book cost to his customers. The sale price of the book is $25.Dave Coe
