Obituary – Additional to what appeared in our paper of last week, we condense from the Prairie City News-Kodak the following regarding the lovely and useful life and peaceful death of Mother Zachary.
Eliza Bice Zachary was born in Highland county Ohio, August 16, 1819, and was married to L. E. Zachary January 29, 1840. From this union were born four sons and three daughters. The sons are W F., Jas. W., L. E., and R B. Zachary; the daughters, Mrs Catharine Hays, Emma Zachary and Mrs. W H. Cochran, all living.
Mrs. Zachary came to Jasper county with her husband in the spring of 1850. They resided on a farm up to August, 1876, when they took up their residence just west of Prairie City. Mrs. Zachary had a fall about 26 yer ago, and sustained injuries from which she never recovered. Sixteen years ago last November she was stricken with paralysis, soon after she suffered from another stroke, which impaired her health, so that she ever remained a constant, yet patient sufferer.
On Saturday, May 19th, about five o’clock she suffered the third stroke. This left her in such a shattered condition that she lingered in a semi-conscious state until Monday the 28th at 2:35 a.m. when she peacefully passed the boundary of her earthly life.
In early life Mrs. Zachary was a member of the Methodist church, but on account of her enfeebled condition, she mingled but little in public life. Disabled as she was, she gave unremitting attention to her domestic duties, making home pleasant to her family – rearing her boys and girls to a strong and respected manhood and womanhood. All give evidence of mother’s tenderness and hospitality. It is one of those strikingly uncommon incidents of life that a father, mother and seven children are spared to each other for sixty years without a break.
The funeral was from the family residence, Rev. C. E. Wells, officiated, assisted by Rev. J. J. Mitchell. The services were largely attended, especially from the country, and the interment was in the family lot, in Waveland cemetery. The following from a distance were present at the funeral: R. B. Zachary and wife of Colfax, T. I. Stoner and wife of Des Moines, Mrs. C. George of Oelwein, Mrs. R Bice, Francis Bice, Ollie Bice, Ike Bice, of Runnells, Mrs. Hutton, Mrs. Goodrich, Mayor P. H. Cragan, M. B. Wheelock, and S. M. Kegley, Colfax.
