Clyde,
Thanks for your info and Netha has also very kindly responded with help.
I've a habit of being a bit long-winded but I'll explain why I'm interested in establishing Alexander's parents.
My ggg grand uncle Alexander b 1794 in Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland wrote his Will in 1855 and refers to two sons, Frederick and Alexander giving Alexander's residence as Alyth. Alexander b1794 died in 1865 and the inventory of his estate lists "Alexander in America 7 pound". I know the older Alexander was married to an Ann Dick and I've a list of their children. It was only in this Will that I discovered he had two older children Frederick and Alexander. The only record online I can find that would fit these two has their mother as May Cuthbert.
Next, the only marriage record (assuming my younger Alexander married) for an Alexander Welsh in Alyth is to Elizabeth Fleming in 1848. As the marriage was before 1855 there's no mention of parents. I am also unable to find Alexander and Elizabeth after the 1851 census.
So, as you can see there's a strong possibility the Iowa Alexander could be the one I'm looking for but genealogy has a way of dangling what looks like a perfect match in front of you, only to snatch it away again!!!
Thanks again for your help, I'm a bit at sea when it comes to genealogy in the US so I'm extremely grateful for all info provided.
Ta,
Christine Mitchell.
