Dr. Schoonover

Funeral services for Dr. Richard Schoonover, 67, who died at 2 a.m. Wednesday at the Davis County Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The funeral will be conducted at the Bloomfield Christian Church by the Rev. Ellis Andrews, assisted by the Rev. Don Slaughter. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.

Dr. Schoonover was a medical doctor at the Gilfillan Clinic from 1946 until he retired in 1975.

He was born July 29, 1915 in Oakland, N.J. and had been a resident of Bloomfield since 1946. He was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Patterson, N.J. and was a member of St. John's In The Wilderness in Harrimen, N.J.

He married Doris Zimmermann on Aug. 14, 1946 in Quincy, Ill.

Dr. Schoonover entered college at 16 and received his BS degree from Washington Square College, New York University in 1935. In 1938, he graduated as an MD from Belleview Hospital Medical School at New York University.

For two years, he served his internship at Patterson General Hospital in Patterson, N.Y. His residency in urology was at Roosevelt Hospital in New York. Dr. Schoonover then spent two years practicing medicine in Ecuador where he treated and delivered many babies of the "hill people" there.

Prior to coming to Bloomfield, he practiced at the Quincy Clinic in Quincy, Ill.

Personal interests included gardening, woodworking, beekeeping, painting, conservation and reading for the blind. He became a pilot in 1940.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Debbie Harrison of Dumont, Holly Schoonover of Minneapolis, Minn. and Christine Crossett of Bloomfield; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ira Jr. and one sister, Dorothy.

The casket will be closed at noon Saturday and taken to the church where it will remain closed. Visitation is open.

A memorial has been established to the Davis County High School scholarship fund or the Davis County Hospital. The family requests no flowers or plants.
