Mary - if his body was found, but it was unable to be ID'd, the authorities most likely would have buried it at the County Farm / Poor Farm cemetery. If the body was ID'd as Adams' the family probably would have buried him in the Clayton cemetery. If the body was found in a different county - for example if the murderer had thrown him in the Mississippi & it washed downstream - the authorities in that county may have buried him in a county cemetery there.

Other than finding him alive after 1886 in a census, or coming across a newspaper article reporting the discovery of his body -- the true story may never be known.

I wish you well & lots of good luck!
