Duane L. Leonard, 73, of 301 Charles, Cherokee, died Thursday in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, following a sudden illness. He had been a resident of Cherokee County since 1922.
Services will be held Monday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cherokee. Visitation will be at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. The body will later be cremated and then interred at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee.
He was born July 25, 1918, in Clearwater, Neb. to William E. “Buzz” and Lula Mae (Patrick) Leonard. They moved to Cherokee in 1922, where Duane attended Cherokee schools. On June 28, 1951, he married Neta Davee in Spencer.
He worked as a plasterer for many years, retiring in 1970. Duane worked for the Cherokee Public School system on the maintenance staff and as a bus driver until 1983. He was Past President of Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 853 and the United Food and Commercial Workers. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Neta, of Cherokee; one daughter, Nancy, also of Cherokee; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one son in infancy in 1958. (Source: Former Cherokee County Historical Society scrapbook clipping hand dated 8-17-91)
