Virgie V. Hanson, 86, of Cherokee, Iowa and formerly of Meriden, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 18, 1998, in the Country Side Estates in Cherokee following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 22 at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in the Meriden Cemetery.
Mrs. Hanson was born on March 7, 1912, on a farm N.E. of Cherokee, Iowa to John and Cora (Freeman) Rhone. She attended country school near Cherokee and then moved to Heron Lake, Minnesota where she graduated from high school in 1930. On December 20, 1931, she married Ervin D. Hanson at Dakota City, Nebraska. She had worked at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for 25 years in the laundry, kitchen and bakery. She had also worked for the Homemaker Health Services in Cherokee for several years. She had been a resident of the Country Side Estates since September 1995 and had lived in Cherokee the past eight years. She previously had lived on a farm west of Cherokee for eight years and before that she had lived in Meriden, Iowa for 40 years. She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Ruth Circle and attended the Presbyterian Women Organization. She belonged to the Meriden Senior Citizens. She loved to cook and bake and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, traveling, fishing, playing cards, music, flowers and playing games with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters: Donna and her husband, Richard Glasson, Cherokee; and Colleen and her husband, Richard Hultman, Kingman, Arizona; a son, John Hanson and his wife, Felicia, Storm Lake, Iowa; nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Floyd Rhone and his wife, Twyla, Spokane, Washington; and a sister-in-law, Marge Rhone, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ervin on January 18, 1975; two great grandsons; a brother; and a sister.
