Obituary
Samuel Underhill died in Cherokee, Iowa, March 23rd, 1879. He was born in Washington county, PA., May 13, 1808. In early life he removed to Cambridge, Ohio, where in 1832 he was converted and joined the M. E. church, of which he remained a consistent member until his death. June 8th, 1832, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Ann Rollins, who walked with him through the remainder of life’s uneven path. In 1893 he removed with his family to Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill., and from thence to this place in 1876. Some twenty-five years ago he became broken down in health which he never entirely recovered. The last two years of his life he was confined to his home, for the most part a helpless invalid. He was a very patient sufferer and bore his affliction with Christian fortitude. Latterly he frequently expressed a desire to depart and be with Christ and was anxious to be summoned to his home on high. He was always gratified to have a Christian come in and talk to him of his Savior, and pray with. A few months before his death he became greatly concerned for a number of his children who were still unconverted, and his earnest prayers on their behalf were not in vain, as the past few months witnessed the hopeful conversion of every one of these children. This blessed fact filled his soul with raptures which found expression in frequent shouts of joy. His favorite hymns which he loved to sing, were “When I can read my title clear" and “Alas! And did my Saviour bleed.” He died in great peace, and in full hope of a blessed immortality. (Source: Iowa Free Press, Cherokee, IA, Tuesday, April 1, 1879, pg. 3)
