AN OLD CITIZEN PASSES AWAY
Sudden Demise of Mr. F. W. Huxford, One of Cherokee’s Early Settlers

When the news was circulated last Thursday evening that Fred Huxford was dead, it caused no great surprise, for although it occurred suddenly his many friends realized that it might occur at any time. For several years he had been afflicted with paralysis of the brain in more or less degree, the disease at times affecting his mind. But a short time before his death he able to be about attending to business, but the disease had too firm a hold on him, and the grim monster has claimed his own. Mr. Huxford died without warning in the presence of his attendant, none of his family being in his room at the time.

Mr. Huxford was born in Albia, Michigan and at the time of his death had reached the age of 50 years, 6 months and 18 days. He has been a resident of Iowa twenty-one years, coming to Cherokee sixteen years ago.

Before being afflicted with the dreadful malady that resulted in his death, Fred Huxford’s prominence in all matters of public welfare, and upbuilding of Cherokee was a matter of note. His life was a useful one and prosperity favored him. Everybody knew Fred and his many friends deeply regret that his life was thus cut short. He leaves a wife and three grown sons – Charley, Edward and Clayton.

The funeral exercises were held at the family residence on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mr. Brainard, and attended by a large number of the family, who followed the remains to the last resting place with hearts filled with sympathy and sorrow.
