Dennis F. Sperfslage, 68, of Independence, Iowa, died November 13, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Dennis Francis Sperfslage was born April 14, 1956, in Manchester, the son of Richard William and Ethel Bertha (Greiner) Sperfslage. Dennis was raised and educated in the Winthrop area and was a 1974 graduate of East Buchanan High School. After graduating Dennis worked at various jobs in the area. He began farming at age nineteen in Buchanan County and continued farming throughout his life. He worked many hours with Joe Gallery excavating and moving grain bins for over twenty years.

On February 28, 1976, Dennis was united in marriage to Cheryl Scott (Werling) at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop. Two children were born to this union. The couple later divorced. On June 19, 1982, Dennis was married to Pamela Pearson (Sackett) at the Buchanan County Courthouse. Two children were born to this union. The couple later divorced.

Dennis began trapping muskrats and beavers when he was young. From then on he was known as “Muskie”. His passion was for farming. Dennis milked cows, crop farmed, raised rabbits and beef cattle keeping them fed with the hay he enjoyed bailing. Animals held a special place in his heart. Dennis also enjoyed planting flowers and gardening.

Dennis loved his family and always looked forward to time with his kids and grandkids. He was the family historian with the greatest memory. Dennis loved family picnics and get togethers. He was always available to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Survivors include his 3 children: Jeremiah (Carrie) Sperfslage of Harrisburg, NE, Joleen Sperfslage-Sawicki of Cedar Rapids, IA, Dawn (Ryan) Kress of Winthrop, IA; 10 grandchildren: Kylie (Zach) Ansley, Jacob and Alaina Sperfslage, Preston, Felix, Eli and Marissa Sawicki, Kading, Reagan and Gracyn Kress; 1 great grandchild: Tate Ansley; 6 brothers: David (Colleen) of Winthrop, Daniel (Diane) of Aurora, Roger (Shelley) of Winthrop, Donald (Verna) of Winthrop, Richard (Wendy) of Winthrop and Dean (Dana) of Edgewood; 5 sisters: Ruth (James) Mangold of Coggon, Rita (Robert) Knutson of Rowley, Rose (Steve) Schmock of Manchester, Diane (Dean) Stone of Mineola, TX and Darleen (Richard) Espe of Oelwein.

Dennis was preceded in death by his son Nicholas Francis, his parents, and his brother Rodney.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 22, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop with Rev. David M. Beckman officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the Monti Community Hall in Monti and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 22, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Church Hall in Winthrop, Iowa.

Vigil Service: 7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the Monti Community Hall in Monti.
Interment: St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Winthrop.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to: East Buchanan FFA Alumni and Supporters or Care Initiatives Hospice.
