Shirley L. Wendling, 78, of Independence, passed away on November 17, 2024, at her home in Independence, Iowa.

Shirley was born on June 5, 1946, in Independence, IA, the daughter of Loren E. and Veta L. (Butterfield) Ferreter. She grew up in rural Quasqueton, IA. Shirley graduated from East Buchanan High School in Winthrop, IA, in 1964 and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1968. She went on to teach special education at the Oelwein Community Schools for two years.

On April 19, 1969, Shirley married Louis C. Wendling at the St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence IA. They made their home together on the Wendling farm in rural Independence for 55 years. They soon welcomed their four children into their lives, and Shirley enjoyed caring for them. She made sure that her children and especially her grandchildren always had the support they needed.

In 1984, Shirley went back to work. For over forty years she sold advertising specialties for Thomas D. Murphy Co. and Bankers Advertising.

She is survived by her husband, Louis Wendling, of Independence; two daughters, Kayleen (Aaron) Hornbrook of Ankeny, IA, and Barbara Wendling of Independence, IA; daughter-in-law Lisa Wendling of Independence, IA, four grandchildren, Karter, Sawyer, and JorgieRae Wendling and Shawn Hornbrook, a sister, Patricia (Ron) Sandhoff of Schaller, IA, and a brother, Mike (Judy) Ferreter of Independence, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Loren and Veta Ferreter, and two sons; Joseph “Little Joey” Wendling and Richard “Rick/Rona” Wendling.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church with the Very Rev. David Beckman
officiating.

Burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Independence, IA. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 PM on Wednesday, November 21, 2024, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.

A rosary will be said at 3:45 PM and a Parish Vigil service will be held at 7:30 PM on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Independence Food Pantry and Cedar Valley Hospice.
