Surigao Strait; Robert. Daniels in the invasion of the Phillipine Islands; Tommy Scholz in naval engagements in the pacific; Richard Spillman in the Anzio invasion Leonard Schroeder in the battle of Aachen; Sgt. Gilles Flaherty was hospitalized with battle injuries.

Lt. Joseph Wolfe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wolfe, was killed in action when his fighter aircraft was shot down near Eger, Germany on April 17, 1945.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kloster were notified that their son, Pfc. Morris Kloster, had lost his life while in combat in Germany on April 27th.

Pfc. John A. Moellers, son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Moellers, died from wounds inflicted by enemy machine gun fire, while administering first aid to wounded soldiers during the invasion of Okinawa.

On the afternoon of May 8, 1945. the people of Ossian gave thanks at their churches for the conclusion of hostilities in the European war theater. All business houses were closed and special services were held.

Sgt. William Collins was the first Winneshiek county serviceman to receive an army discharge under the point system. Billy saw service in the African and Italian campaigns.

On August 14, 1945 , the Japanese government sued for peace—offering unconditional surrender. The formal ceremonies were held aboard the battleship Missouri in Tokio Bay.

A dinner and party for all veterans of WWII was held on the 23rd of November in 1947 at the opera house. The American Legion Auxiliary served as hostesses. Attendance was reported as about 200 discharged servicemen and their wives.

1942

The city council established an hourly wage of 35¢ for snow shovelers at their January meeting. The rate allowed for trucks hauling snow was set at 85¢.

The school board election was hotly contested with eight candidates seeking the four seats. Lawrence Meyer, Fred Scheidel, Rex Ward and S. B. Bergland were elected. Louis Dvorak was the holdover director. Herman Schulze retained his position of treasurer.

Mrs. Lena Kamp entered suit against the town following the death of her son, Allan Alt, from injuries suffered in a sleighing accident on Livery Hill. The coasting problem was discussed at a meeting of the Commercial Club. It was decided to place four red lanterns warning motorists of sleighing. Club members will police the hill each night from 7:00 to 9:00 P. M.

The Ossian liquor store reported war bond sales of $1111 during July. This is the highest total of any store in northeastern Iowa.

The buttermakers of Iowa held their convention in the opera house. Following the business meeting, a banquet, prepared by Mrs. Mayme Gunderson, was consumed by the 240 guests. A dance was held in the evening.

Don Amundsen purchased the Ossian Bee on April 24, 1942. Mrs. Amundsen is a hometown girl—the former Rosalind Riveland.

The graduates from Ossian's schools this year were: De Sales—Hugo Barthelme, Regina Hemesath, Audrey Johnson, Colette Kipp, Madonna Lansing, Genevieve Nesbit, Mariette Remke, Harold Scheidel, Audrey Timp, Magdalen Zweibohmer and Teresa Bodensteiner. Ossian public—Darleen Amdahl, Alvina Anfinson, G. F. Gunderson, Blaine Jones, Hanferd Moen, Elmer Stangland, Orville Larson and Orlin Johnson.

Ossian's businessmen organized a commercial club at a meeting in the legion room. These men were selected as officers: Francis Giblin, president; William Schroeder, vice president; Don Ammundsen sec'y; and A. S. Andresen, treasurer.

The following were named to the executive committee: Jack Collins, Cleo Cahill, S. B. Bergland, Harold Klisart and Philip Schmitz.

The Jefferson Bus Company announced that their schedule will be revised to comply with the 35 mph war-time speed limit.

Hugo Barthelme has decided to keep the bicycle he advertised for sale. Hugo, after receiving 48 inquiries in answer to his ad, quipped: "If that many people
