A picture display of 41 servicemen and women was shown in the windows of the Gunderson Department Store.

Ossian*s citizens purchased over $105,000 of war bonds during 1942. This sum more than doubled the quota assigned the town.

Gilbert Evanson volunteered to serve as the local placement official to help farmers in obtaining hands to assist in harvesting their crops.

Ossian*s three coal dealers advised their customers that, due to the rationing of gasoline, all pathways to coal bins must be cleared of snow prior to delivery.

A surprise blackout test was termed a complete success by Chief Henry Dessel. The Japanese bombers would have had great difficulty locating this town. A padlock was placed to secure the trap-door on top of the watertower to prevent saboteurs from poisoning the city's water supply.

Local motorists were notified that their tires must be inspected on a regular schedule:    every four months for holders of "A” or "D" mileage books and every 60 days for "B", "C" & "D" book holders.

The Red Gross sewing and knitting circles, meeting at the home of Mrs. Evenson, have completed 58 sweaters, 60 sewed garments and several layettes. By the fall of 1943,    a total of 68 overseas kits had been completed by Ossian's sewing circles, and $68 in cash donated for articles to stock them. The groups of ladies contributing to this project were: Catholic Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, Lutheran Ladies Aid, Lutheran Choir, Ossian Study Club and the ladies of Bloomfield township.

Mrs. Lila Juen, chairwoman of the Red Cross Production Unit, has appointed these ladies as unit leaders; Mesdames Louis Holder, Arthur Noecker, William Schroeder, Thearon Hauge, Gus Stanz, W. E. Cornell, S. B. Bergland, Will Helwig, E. C. Werner and Miss Ernestine Klein. Mrs. Herman Schulze was designated as knitting general. This group completed 734 utility bags and 175 Red Cross kits in 1943.

C. R. Nicholson was named flight leader of the Civil Air Patrol at Mobile, Ala. Rodney was foreman of maintenance at the army air base at that city. He supervised a crew of 225 aircraft mechanics.

Rodney Nicholson Jr. received his commission in the air corps. Don Evenson, Arthur Anderson and Ray Dessel were promoted to the rank of 2nd lieutenant in the army. Walter Daniels was awarded a battlefield commission during the allied invasion of Italy. Oberlin Nereson enlisted in the naval reserve as a lieutenant J. G.

The Commercial Club asked all residents to raise a victory garden this spring of 1943.

Coupons, have become necessary for the following items; gasoline, coffee, sugar, fuel oil, shoes, meats, fats, cheese, fish and groceries.

Ossian's quota was set at $45,570 in the third war bond drive. The ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary met $9,000 of this sum during their "Molly Pitcher tag day" promotion.

Sgt. Robert Allen became the first Ossian boy to lose his life in world war II. He was drowned in the Pacific War Theater while crossing a swift stream with full pack.

The registration for ration book no. 4 was held at the school house in October of 1943. The school staff assisted in signing a total of 1705 citizens during the three days.

Mrs. Hazel Schulze was in charge of a war fund drive in 1943. Her nineteen solicitators collected $737—well over the quota of $623. Loretto McGary's Red Cross workers raised $599 during the drive for members in 1944.    Leo Scheidel's crew collected $346 in Military township.

On June 6, 1944, "D-day" was observed by services at the town's churches. All business houses flew the flag in front of their establishments.

A drive for used clothing to be sent to our Russian allies was conducted by the school children under the direction of Mrs. Hazel Schulze. Mr. James Felix, chairman of the campaign, gave a free movie ticket to each of the young participants.
