Aged Resident's Funeral Here
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Sam Bailey, a
pioneer mother of this community. Brief services were held at the funeral
home in Fort Dodge and public services were held at the M. E. Church here
with Rev. C. H. Moore in charge. Interment was in the south cemetary. A host
of friends and relatives gathered to pay their last respects to this aged
lady.
The following life sketch was read at the service.
Polly A. Bailey was born in Gentry county, Missouri, February 2, 1846,
and passed away at her home in Lehigh, Iowa. October 9, 1937, at the age of
72 years, 8 months and 6 days.
She was united in marriage to Sam Bailey January 14, 1883 and to this
union were born nine children, one of whom, Mrs. Lydia Flockhart, proceeded
her in death.
Besides her aged husband she is survived by eight children; Mrs. Hester
Young, Cleve Bailey and Tom Bailey of Lehigh., David Bailey and Mrs. Alta
Fye of Fort Dodge, George Bailey of Lambertin, Minn., and Mrs. Birdie
Harrah, Laurens, Iowa. She is also survived by forty grandchildren and nine
great grand -children, also two sisters, one sister and one brother having
preceded her in death.
She was a loving wife and mother and had a host of friends. In the early
days of their married life Mr. and Mrs. Bailey traveled from Gentry county,
Missouri to Lehigh, Iowa in a covered wagon in the year 1886 and settled on
a farm where they lived until a few years ago when failing health forced
them to retire from the strenuous labor, and they moved to town.
MRS. SAM BAILEY DIES AT HER HOME IN LEHIGH
Mrs. Sam Bailey, 72 years of age and a resident of Webster county for
more than fifty years, died at her home in Lehigh at 2 o'clock this morning.
Mrs. Bailey had been ill for many months.
Besides her husband she is survived by eight children. They are; Mrs.
Ester Young, Cleve and Thomas Bailey of Lehigh, Mrs. Alta Fye, and David
Bailey, Fort Dodge, George Bailey of Lamber, Minn. John Bailey of Mason and
Mrs. Birdie Harrah of Lorenz. A daughter, Mrs. Lyda Flockard died ninteen
years ago.
There are forty grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Two sisters
are living. They are Mrs. Catharine McGuire of Little Falls, Minn. and Mrs.
Laura West, Fort Dodge. Two brothers and one sister died a number of years
ago.
Funeral services will take place Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the
Laufersweiher Undertaking parlors and at 2:30 at the Christian church in
Lehigh. Burial will be in the Oak Grove cemetery in Lehigh.
