Was Chief Executive of Iowa For Two Terms, From 1871- His Early Life
Ft. Dodge, Ia., May 30. - ExGovernor Cyrus C. Carpenter is dead, aged sixty eight.
Cyrus C. Carpenter was born in Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, November 24, 1829.
He had a common school education and taught school there and later in Johnstown,
Ohio. He came to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1854, when that city had 1,200 inhabitants.
A few days later he started on foot up the Des Moines valley, then just beginning
to be considered the El Dorado of the Hawkeye state. He found his way to Ft. Dodge,
where he soon found employment with a government surveyor. He afterwards went into
the coal business, at the same time carrying on the study of the law, being admitted
to the bar. Soon after the civil was was commenced he entered the army, and before
going into the field was commissioned as captain in the staff department and served
over three years, attaining the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1856 he was elected
surveyor of Webster county and the following year was elected representative to
the general assembly serving on the first session of that body held in Des Moines.
He was elected register of the state land office in 1866 and re-elected in 1868,
and held the office for four years, declining to be a candidate for renomination.
He was elected govenor of Iowa by the republicans in 1871 and re-elected two years
later, making an able and popular executie. After the expiration of his governorship
he was appointed, without his knowlege of the design to do so, second comptroller
of the United States treasury and resigned after holding that office for fifteen
months. He was married in March, 1864, to Miss Susan C. Burkholder, of Ft. Dodge.
No children were born to this union.
