Charles Cyrus Cook, Sr.

Charles Cyrus Cook, SR. was born in the borough of Boston, Lincolnshire, England in 1807. Charles, his wife, Mary Ann (Swift) Cook, b. 1809 - d. 1880 and their two children, George b. 1830 and Mary Ann b. 1832, departed from London and came to the United States arriving on 5/15/1837. Caroline, their 3rd child was born in 1842 in New York. Also born in New York, were Enos, born in 1843, Edmond born in 1846 and Charles, Jr. born in 1849. All of the above, are buried in the Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills, Iowa except for George who is buried in the Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, Iowa.

According to the 1840 census, the family lived in Seneca, New York. Charles received his citizenship on June 22, 1847  in Erie County, New York as the family resided in Williamsville, Erie County, New York. By 1850, the census shows their residency in Waterloo, New York where Charles built a large "furniture and undertaking factory".

Charles started purchasing land in Troy Mills, Iowa in the Spring Grove Township. Records are as follows:
1854 - Sept. 11, - NE 1/4 of SE 1/4 of section 5 - 40 Acres-$40
1855 - July 13, - SE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of section 5 - 40 Acres-$50
(Purchased by his oldest son, George who came to Iowa in 1855)
1857 - Oct 11 - NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of section 4 - 40 Acres-$50
1859 - July 14 - NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 5 - 40 Acres-$200

From the old account books, Charles was still in business at Waterloo in 1855 and then came to Troy Mills, Iowa in 1857. He built a large home on the south side of the Wapsipinicon River. In 1869, he rented the saw mill on the north side of the "Wapsi" River. Sons, Enos Cook and Charles Cook, JR. purchased an old ferry from Independence, Iowa, floated it down the river to "Troy" in order to haul people across the river. Since it wasn't always dependable, later on a foot bridge was built of lumber and lime rock, connecting the saw mill on north side of the river across to the south side.

Here is a "Quote" from the "Troy Mills Centennial Book"

"Among the earlier settlers was Charles Cook, a native of England, who came to Iowa in the fall of 1857 locating across the river, south of Troy Mills. He built a substantial house the year he came to Iowa.

Shortly afterward, Mr. Cook built a cabinet shop near his house. Mr. Cook could do all kinds of work and repairing needed in the new country. He was the only undertaker in this part of the county. He made many well finished coffins.

Two or three years after he came to Troy Mills, Mr. Cook rented the saw mill for a year, and during that time he put up a turning lathe in the mill.  He could turn anything from a button to a cane. People went to him for all kinds of turned goods, potato masher, pitchfork handles, and broomsticks. When the land was surveyed it was found out that the mill was partly on Cook's land.

However there was no trouble as the mill company gave Mr. Cook 200 inches of water on the south side of the river. Cook at once built a shop and utilized his water power. His shop was used until it was washed away by the high water in 1865. Cook never rebuilt."

End of Quote

From the last 40 acres that Charles purchased, he donated a portion of land to be the Troy Mills Cemetery. None of the lots were to be sold and one only had to pay $1 to have it recorded. At the same time he gifted the land, his daughter, Mary Ann, laughed and made the comment that she wondered who would be the first person buried there. She was the first. A tombstone was placed for her at the top of the hill. Mary Ann (Cook) Hulbert born 8/25/1832 - died 10/1/1864.

Charles Cyrus Cook, SR. died 8/4/1865. He did not want a tombstone, only a tree in his memory and was buried under a large pine tree by one of the cemetery's roads. The tree is no longer standing and no stone was put there to mark his grave. The Cook family plot is at the top of the hill in front of the flagpoles per a family letter written in 1995 and describes the location where Mary Ann is buried.

The other daughter, Caroline (Cook) Holman, died in 1875 is buried next to Mary Ann with a stone. Son, Edmond Charles Cook and his wife, Alice (Reece) Cook are buried in the Cook family plot with a large stone with the plot name of "The old part" Lot 42. Next to that in the row for the Cook family is Edmond and Alice's 3rd child George H. Cook. In the same plot is Edmond and Alice's 2nd child, Lilly May Cook, with a stone and their 6th child, Perry James Cook, with no stone. Son, Charles Cyrus Cook, JR. and his wife, Agnes (Reece) Cook are buried in the family plot along with their child, Nettie Cook with no stones. Charles Cyrus Cook, JR. and his 2nd wife Sarah had an infant child born and died in 1887 that was also buried in the Cook family plot. Son, Enos Cook, and his wife Elizabeth Maria "Eliza" (Peyton) Cook are both buried in another section of the cemetery.

Charles and Mary Ann moved to Troy Mills, Iowa, Spring Grove Township, in 1863 with both boys. Her husband returned to New York with their two children, and remarried in 1878 to Cordelia E. (Baker) Curtis b. 1840-d.1912, who, also, had two children. They moved to Kansas.
