The brick and tile works was founded by the Stitch Brothers, Jacob and
Otis. It filed for incorporation March 30, 1901, under the name of
"Livermore Brick and Tile Works." Incorporators were C. Karslund, H. S.
Buell, E. E. Conner, D. Zigrang, B. F. Reilly and Otis Stitch. the
amount of capital stock was $10,000 to be divided into shares of $100
each.
For a long time it was the only business of its kind in
the county. It manufactured 200,000 to 300,000 soft brick per year, of
fair quality due to many small limestone pebbles in the clay. It was
more successful with tile, turning out 300,000 to 400,000 per year. The
demand constantly exceeded the capacity of the plant. The plant used
Fort Dodge brand of coal for fuel. It enjoyed a remarkable success
within a short while.
The brick in the Livermore State Bank came from the
towns' own brick and tile factory.
The tile factory was located on the southwest corner of
Livermore on the small farm now owned by LeRoy Gronbach.
Please bear in mind when viewing the following pictures
that they were scanned from an old newspaper. I tried to clean them up
as best I could, and almost did not include them. Perhaps someone has
better photos and will contribute them.
The Brick and Tile Works was destroyed by a tornado.
