Notes:

The source of the burials and other information on this page is from newspaper articles in the Clayton County Register (Voss' Genie column); from a biography and the obituary of Benedict Shori Jr. of Elgin, who was a son of Benedich Sr. & Mary; Elgin Cemetery gravestones (Iowa Gravestone Photo Project); and census records.

Benedich (06/27/1816 - 05/06/1883) and Maria / Mary Ann Schori (05/15/1818 - 09/10/1885) are buried in the Elgin City cemetery, Elgin, Fayette co. Iowa.

Benedich was married twice. His first wife was Mary Baumgartner, who died in Switzerland prior to his coming to the U.S. in 1846. Mary Ann was Benedich's 2nd wife and possibly the mother of 8 year old John. Nikolas may have been named after his paternal grandfather.
