Alpheus Hauley Phelps ca late 1800's
The photo of Alpheus H. Phelps was
originally shown to me by my grandfather, Steven L Phelps
Sr. I believe he originally received a scanned copy from
Roger Handke, who in 1981 wrote a book about Wilbur and
Stella Phelps. Alpheus Hauley Phelps was my 4th great grandfather. He was born May 23, 1821 in Canada to William and Lydia (Stevens) Phelps. His journey to Iowa is somewhat unknown, but we do know that he removed to Iowa in 1850. On October 9, 1852 Alpheus was married to a widow, Barbara Ann (Nicholson) Cole. The Phelps homestead was located on the Clayton / Delaware county boundry, sections 33 and 32 in Mallory Township. Together
Alpheus & Barbara had 5 children: William, Evaline,
Wilburn, Laura, and Charlie E.. Obituary of Barbara (Nicholson) Cole

Lincoln & Myrtle Phelps family
Lincoln Frank Phelps
(my 2nd great grandfather) the eldest son of Wilbur and
Stella was born on May 26 1890. He was named Lincoln
after President Lincoln. It was said that the Civil war
had a lasting impact on a young Wilbur. Wilbur's half
brother Thomas Cole died during the Civil War. He had an
admiration for President Lincoln and wanted to honor him
by naming his son after him. Lincoln married Myrtle Clay Bolsinger on Nov 24 1910 in Clayton Co. and together they had one daughter, Opal May who was born in 1913. The marriage only lasted a few years and then Lincoln left Iowa.
Lincoln later on married Leona Lewis (Stryker) in Seattle Washington who was previously married to Lincolns Great Uncle, Allen Brown Lewis. His parents did not approve of this marriage. She brought with her 4 children from 2 prior marriages. Together they had 3 children. |

of the family information is from the research of my
cousin, Roger Handke, who in 1981 wrote a book of the
lineage of Wilbur and Stella (Fishel) Phelps."
