Liberty Township  Early Schools


School: The inaugural term was taught By Mrs. John Gere winter of 1871-72 in her own home on Section 25. Section 26  received first frame scoolhouse in 1872. Jeanie Robe was the first teacher here. (Cherokee Daily Times Thurs. May 31, 1956, pg. 28)

April 1874 – bids open for construction of school house in sub district 3 (or 8) in Liberty twp.

Mr. & Mrs. Anderson purchased the old Gere school house and grounds 10 years ago and have converted it into a home of beauty where flowers bloom from early spring until late fall.  Some blossoms still brighten the lawn this late in the season. Liberty Society – Mrs. David Johnson, Miss Hannah Dahlgren and Mrs. E. J. Walker celebrated jointly their birthdays which occurred January 15, 14, and 12 respectively in the home of the latter Friday afternoon. These three women were born and raised in the same school district and attended school together through the eighth grades in the old Gere School, now occupied as a home by Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Anderson.  (Source: The Cherokee Chief, Friday, Jan 28, 1938, pg. 4)

Liberty School House News

No. 1 Traver School House - Box Socials were popular public events held by the rural schools in order to raise money.  An example is from 1910 when the Teacher, Miss Fannie Arrasmith hosted one at Traver School.

No. 2 Henderson School House - The teacher, Miss Johnson, was married over the 1908 Christmas break.

No. 3 Ewoldt School House - The school held a cake walk social event in 1899.
In 1909, evening revival meetings were being held by a preacher from Marcus.
In 1910, the school held a box social event.
In 1913, the Reverand Kopp was using the school on Sundays to preach sermons.
