D J Bartlet was school instructor for
the first term in the fall of 1871. The school accommodation building
was a rough shack built for temporary use on Section 27. Initial frame
school sites were constructed in 1875. (Cherokee Daily Times Thurs. May
31, 1956, pg. 28)
On May 31, 1872, it was announced that a school house would be built on section 25 in Amherst township.
There
are conflicting stories as to when the first school house was built.
One story reported the first school house was built in 1873.
The
school house in district 1 Amherst is well under way. In district No. 3
there has been much trouble over the location of the site. State Supt.
Has approved the decision of Mr. Sanders and the house is to be built
near Mr. Hornibrook’s. (no date)
