J. C. STEWART was born in Steuben County, New York, on May 26, 1843. His parents moved to Illinois when he was ten years old and he later served in the Civil War, during which he was captured by the Confederates and survived imprisonment in the infamous Libbie Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Upon discharge, he farmed successively in Hardin and Marshall Counties, Iowa, then Lee County, Illinois, then returned to Hardin County, Iowa, and remained two years. He then moved to a farm in Shelby County four miles north of Marne in 1874. He improved this farm and later moved to a farm on the north edge of Marne and lived there for many years. John C. Stewart owned considerable real estate and was a stockholder in the Marne Savings Bank and Atlantic National Bank in Atlantic. He married Lucretia Long in Illinois on November 20, 1871 and they had three sons - Herbert, Frank and John.
