GRANVILLE B. OLNEY was born in Knox County, Ohio, on November 3, 1841. His family moved to Mahaska County, Iowa, when he was eight years old. He worked in Rhode Island for two years from 1864 to 1866, then returned to Mahaska County, Iowa, and worked as a carpenter and later manufactured beehives. He came to Cass County in 1871 and purchased eighty acres which he rapidly expanded to 180 acres and engaged in raising cattle. In 1872 his stock sales reached $78,000. He later invented an improved beehive and patented it; it became a financial success. On February 2, 1879, Granville B. Olney married Anna M. Taylor, and the couple had three children - John B., Vernon O. and Anna M.
