M. V. NUSSBAUM was born in Richland County, Ohio, on July 7, 1841. Shortly afterward, his family moved to Putnam County, Ohio, and in 1847 to Polk County, Iowa. Mr. Nussbaum served in the Civil War and was discharged at Keokuk due to disability. He returned to Polk County and was there married to Nancy E. McCain in 1864. The couple moved to Monona County, Iowa, and operated a sawmill for seven years. Mr. Nussbaum then worked as a carpenter and at times as a coal miner at Des Moines and Van Meter, De Soto and Exira, then moved to Marne in 1881. He worked as a carpenter for two years here and in 1883 opened a wagon-making shop in Marne. The Nussbaums had four children survive the critical infancy period - Julia V., Franklin W., Martin V., and Robert B.
