The firm of
Highley Bros., Grocers, Atlantic, Iowa, is composed of Alonzo C. and George HIGHLEY.
1. Alonzo C. HIGHLEY, was born in Scott County, Iowa, August 3, 1870, and when he was sixteen years old he came to Atlantic. His first employment was with Levi DOWNS, after which he went to Marshalltown and stayed six years in the dry goods business. He returned to Atlantic in February, 1903, and in company with George, purchased the grocery business of R. E. ANDERSON. He is a member of the K. P. lodge.
4. George HIGHLEY, was also born in Scott County, in 1878, and came to Atlantic at the same time "Lon" did. He found employment with Worthing, afterwards with Bailey, and then with Anderson. His knowledge of the Anderson business led to its purchase. He is also a Knight of Pythias.
The business built up by the HIGHLEYs has exceeded their expectations, and it is constantly growing and expanding. They keep the best of everything in their line, sell at reasonable prices, and satisfy their trade.
2. Richard H. BAILEY, of BAILEY & Son, Grocers, Atlantic, Iowa, is the oldest groceryman in Atlantic, having engaged in the business here on the 13th of December, 1880. He was born March 31, 1849, at Monticello, Illinois, and lived there until after he was twenty-five years old, when he went to Marshall County and engaged in farming. At the end of two years he moved into Marshalltown and for three years clerked for his brother in a grocery store. Then he came to Atlantic and bought out the HOYT store. He moved in 1885 into the building now owned and occupied by him. He has been a member of the School Board and the City Council and is at present a member of the Library Board and a director in the Atlantic National Bank. He is a Mason and a Woodman. He has always been in the van of the progressive business men and citizens and has contributed to every worthy undertaking. His business has always been thrifty and he is the complete master of all its details.
3. James STIER, the well-known Atlantic Grocer, was born in Maisville, Scott County, Iowa, August 12, 1866, and with his parents came to Pleasant township in this county in the spring of 1874. He worked on the farm for about two years and then came to Atlantic where he attended school until 1881. He then entered the grocery store of L. H. MOELLER, where he remained as clerk until 1886, and the following year was employed by the old dry goods firm of STAFFORD & HAWKS. The same year he went into the grocery business with W. B. MARTIN. In 1889 A. L. DUNN was taken in as a member of the firm. In 1904 the firm of STIER, MARTIN, & DUNN dissolved and the business was continued by Mr. STIER. He was a member of the City Council eight years and of the Atlantic Fire Department eleven years. He is an Elk, Odd Fellow, member of the Camp, and M. W. of A. and a Maccabee. He is an enterprising business man and a firm friend of Atlantic and Cass County enterprises.
