In the summer of 1876 the Board of Supervisors authorized this historical sketch, or these historical sketches, of Cass county to be prepared. No arrangement was made for their publication -- hence the printing of this pamphlet is entirely a private enterprise. I feel that the work is not so complete as it might be. It was prepared in the midst of a political campaign, while editorial and business duties were very exacting and pressing. The information given is not in so connected a form, arranged in chapters, nor classified asit should have been, for the reason that publication of it was made in weekly installments in the ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH before being printed in this form. I trust and believe that the work will be found to be correct in its narration of events pertaining to the early settlement of the county, and hope that it may be read with interest by those into whose hands it may come.

[Below, from the Proceedings of the Board of Supervisors of Cass County, June meeting, 1870.]

The question being on the proclamation by the Governor, in reference to the joint resolution of the Senate and House of Representatives, recommending to the people of the several States that they assemble in their several counties or towns on the approaching Centennial Anniversary of our National Independence, and that they cause to be delivered on such day an historical sketch of said county or town from its foundation, etc. And it being suggested by the Governor of the State of Iowa, that said sketch be supplemented with other sketches, such as sketches of School Districts, Colleges, Academies, Church Organizations, Benevolent, Literary, Scientific, and Fraternal Associations, etc.,it was--

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors that Lafe Young be selected to prepare such a sketch of Cass county, and that said Lafe Young be selected to prepare such a sketch of Cass county, and that said Lafe Young deliver at the office of the County Auditor twenty-five copies of said sketch for the county, and that he transmit one copy to the Congressional Library, one to the State Library at Des Moines, and one to the State Historical Society, at Iowa City.
