Melvin Hoffman
(1905 – July 18, 1907)

A Sad Accident
Melvin, the two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoffman, who reside two miles south and one mile west of Deer Creek, met with a tragic death last Thursday night about seven o’clock. The father had not yet returned from the field and the mother was busily engaged preparing supper. The mother missed the child from the room, but thinking he had gone to meet his father as was his custom, she paid no attention to his absence. A few moments later she went out to the front porch to see if her husband ws coming and there she found the lifeless form of her child. The little one had tumbled head foremost into a ten gallon jar of water. Everything possible was done to restore the little one, but it was in vain as life was extinct. Sadly they laid the little form away, the funeral being held at the home at noon on Saturday. This is one of those accidents for which no one is to blame and which seemingly could not be guarded against. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman are hard working people who cherish their little ones fondly and it is a terrible blow to them. In their sorrow they have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
Card of thanks – We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the kind friends and neighbors for their help and sympathy at the time of the death of our little son, Melvin. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoffman. Source – Northwood Anchor, Northwood, Iowa, Tuesday, July 23, 1907, p.4
